This very old, traditional stone house has a living space of roughly 75 square meters.
In the spacious living room is one double bed and one single bed, but also the comfortable couch can be used as a sleeping possibility. In the small sleeping room is a double bunk bed and in the eating room between kitchen and living room is one more couch which can also be used as a bed. Kitchen and Bathroom are simple but practical equipped. Also a washing mashine is there and WIFI internet access is provided.
The house is furnished very homelike, and many lovingly draped accessories remind how people once used to live in such a farm house.
Some trees in the garden - maybe as old as the house itself - provide the espacially in summer badly needed shade. From the veranda with barbeque one can see through the olive trees the sparkling sea. The house lies secludedly from the main road and offers quietness allthough it is not far from the touristy Stoupa to where one can also easily walk. One bicycle is also there, free to use.
The house is suitable also for winter stays. It is heated with a wood stove and for long winter evenings there is also a television.
The house was completely refurbished in 2013/14. Please ask also for our brief introduction to this house!
Her name is mentioned only once in Nikos Kazantzakis novel 'Zorba the Greek'. She was the the beautiful widow (in the film played by Irini Papas) in which Kazantzakis had fallen in love.
We named our house 'Sourmelina' because the widow which lived in this house the time Kazantzakis was staying in Stoupa, has probably inspired him to the figure. The house which was at that time the administrative building of the coal mine is just 150 meters away...

#2: Winter stay
Posted by Sandra & Floris - 04/06/2015 - 19:36
Review winter in House Sourmelia. We stayed 3 month in the very cosy house Sourmelia, in the hills, and also very close to the beach and with beautifull seaview! Our 2 dogs and cat enjoyed it as much as we 2 persons did! Every day a couple of nice walks on the hillside and in a short while also to the beach, where we were almost alone all the time. The surroundings are so nice and the house is so cosy, not the standard sober holidayhouse, but an authentic house with nice pictures on the wall and funny stuff. The garden is so beautifull, a nice view on the trees and the sea, we had read many books in here listening to the birds to sing and watch the sun go dow into the sea...... Thanks for a nice stay an hopefully till a next time! Floris and Sandra.
