Kythira

Post by MelissaB » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:58 am

Anyone been recently and got any advice on places to stay/eat/visit? Guidebooks and websites are all very well, but there's nothing like first-hand information. Thanks!

Hi Melissa

we are huge fans of Kythira and tried to buy a house there before deciding on the Mani. Best place to stay in my opinion is Kapsali - beautiful old Venetian town on a headland, nice place to stroll in the evening, good restaurants, good beach nearby. Most of the other towns are quite small (except the capital Potamos, which is nice but not as nice). We have stayed several times at the Margarita Hotel and always loved it. Check it out on Tripadvisor. There are also some very nice rentals/pensions in the smaller villages, but we personally dislike the boring resort type hotels at Aghia Pelaghia and Diakofti. There are not a lot of big monuments but some very nice hike/walks available, locally printed hiking guide in the bookshops. The walks around Trifilianika and Mylopotamos are great. aside from the big beaches at Kapsali and Platia Ammos, the rest are mainly small (but very beautiful) coves that take some driving on dirt roads to get to. Kythira has an amazing "end of the world" feel to it, and many villages that are completely empty after the great diaspora to Australia of the 50s. You would definitely want a car/motorbike, public transport is very limited.
