Such a heartbreaking article in the papers today:

I know that the problem is worse in Athens and Thessaloniki, but one wonders how much of a similar issue there is in towns more locally, such as Kalamata?

It is very sad, but the 20% tax on food and drink from the tourists can only work towards helping the situation improve in the long term, there are very few exports from Greece to allow them to balance the books, so the tourist Euro is vital.

Marco, there are many ways to tax the tourists without adding a burden to the local people.... At the moment I'm spending half my time in the UK and half at my home in Kalamata and things have now reached the point where many things cost far more in Greece than the UK and overall the UK is probably as cheap to live in terms of everyday necessities!
