Sale ???????????

Post by MITZIGINGER » Sun Jan 09, 2011 4:05 pm

My wife was viewing the Ag Nik Webcam last Thursday 6/1/11 she noticed a crowd of people on the Ag Nik slipway many more than usual and was wondering what the occasion might have been. Does anyone have any ideas.

If you happened to see a priest amongst the crowd throwing a cross into the sea and lots of young men jumping in after it, then you were witnessing the 'Epiphany' celebrations:

Ephiphany, "Ta Fota" or "Theofania" in Greek, on the 6th January commemorates Christ's Baptism and is another important Greek national and church holiday.
The Blessing of the Waters is symbolised by the throwing of a cross into the sea by a priest, while swimmers brave the chilly waters to retrieve it.

Witnessed a similar throng of people on the Webcam of the harbour at Finikounda last Thursday and did not realise the significance of the occasion
Glad that my curiosity has been satisfied
